Huawei Technologies to start manufacturing smartphones in India

India is one of the fastest-growing smartphone markets in the world. According to International Data Corporation, approximately 27.5 million smartphones were sold in India in the second quarter of 2016, which is 17 percent more from the second quarter of 2015. The smartphone users in the country are anticipated to hit 990 million by the end of this decade, according to Cisco.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, being third largest smartphone maker in the world has not yet been able to increase its presence in India, where market is dominated by rivals including Samsung and Apple, as well as local brands.

Huawei recently announced that that it will start manufacturing smartphones in Chennai next month. The company will operate the facility along with Flextronics International Ltd, a local manufacturer of electronics.  

The Chinese smartphone maker applied for a license to establish a manufacturing plant in India last year, but finally received government approval in July.

CEO at Huawei India, Jay Chen said in a statement that the company is convince about the growth potential and future of India and it will keep exploring opportunities to boost its presence in the country.

China is one of the biggest smartphone markets around the globe, but growth there is deteriorating, therefore, Huawei and other Chinese manufacturers are seeking prospects overseas.
